FCI Dublin is a threat to all of us. I am a historian, and one who grew up in Europe, of parents and grand-parents who saw happen there what is now happening here. Here’s the thing: if things keep going the way they have this year in our country, 5 years from now anyone of us may be the ones ending up in that detention center, once the regime graduates from attacking immigrants to attacking those who wish to exercise their first amendment speech, or even have already done so. If the current trends continue, how much capacity there is for incarceration will determine how much freedom we have.
If you think I’m being paranoid, well that’s ok I’ve been called that plenty in 2015 and 2024 by people who now no longer do. Every human being who have found themselves in the type of situation my parents and grand-parents lived through found themselves saying “we never thought this could happen here”.
FCI Dublin is an imminent threat to our neighbors in Dublin, but also a threat to public safety within the borders of Livermore. A detention facility built in our backyard is an invitation to detain members of our community who hold absolute value in our community. In Mayor Marchand’s re-election campaign, his number one priority was stated to be public safety. Livermore “strives to create a safe, healthy, welcoming city for all our diverse members”, and that must be applicable to our immigrant community otherwise it would be untrue. The possible re-opening of FCI Dublin endangers residents of Livermore, and threatens the well-being of many– as well as those who do not show fear in standing up for their immigrant friends and family. I understand that a resolution has no binding over the federal government, however, dismissing potential uproar, violence, and cruelty simply cannot be an option.

Dear Livermore City Council,
FCI Dublin is an imminent threat to our neighbors in Dublin, but also a threat to public safety within the borders of Livermore.
Thank you,
Dylan Williams
