5.6) Resolution authorizing the issuance of a purchase order for eight replacement police patrol vehicles from Tracy Ford in an amount not-to-exceed $344,176.
The purchase of any new vehicles should be in alignment with the goals of the City's Climate Action Plan and should be the most energy efficient available, especially when the technology exists and is cost effective. We should be purchasing hybrid or EV vehicles from the many models and brands that are available. Please confirm these vehicles meet these goals before authorizing their purchase.
I am concerned that none of the 8 replacement vehicles on order appear to be hybrid or plug-in electric vehicles. Purchasing these gas-powered vehicles seems to fly in the face our city's Climate Action Plan goals, which include "Incentives and information to help residents transition to electric and fuel-efficient vehicles." Our city should walk the talk and be the change we seek by converting our fleet whenever possible to low-zero emission vehicles. There is a new model hybrid Ford Explorer, and a Plug-In Ford Escape. If the objection to these models is the initial price, have the long term cost savings of fuel and maintenance been factored in to the equation? Plus rebate incentives. There are other cities who have adopted EV for their police fleet. Here is one example: https://www.chevrolet.com/new-roads/electric/bolt-ev-electric-car-police-vehicles. I would like to see our city consider leasing and/or purchasing at least half of these vehicles hybrid or PHEV. Thanks.
