The rainbow flag was designed by Gilbert Baker purely to symbolize lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer pride. This community defined themselves by their sexual preference (originally for gay/lesbian/bisexual), but has had more nuances added over time.
I understand that the rainbow flag is a commemorative flag, and Livermore displays it as a form of government speech. The Livermore government, however, represents more citizens than the LGBTQ+ community. Therefore, I believe if you aren’t going to use government speech to affirm all communities (Sikh, Asian American, Muslim, Christian, Pacific Islanders, etc.), you shouldn’t use it to affirm just one that bears personal interest. I understand that the LGBTQ community has pride, but I disagree that a government/city building that is supposed to represent ALL is the appropriate place to display it. If the rainbow flag flies, other special interest flags should fly as well.
