6.3) Discussion and Direction regarding the City Council’s commitment to a culture of welcome, inclusion and respect and the comments made by Planning Commissioner Stein at the Planning Commission Meeting on April 20, 2021, as well as the complaints received from the community.
Commissioner Stein’s language regarding a neighborhood in our Livermore community is unacceptable. This issue reminds me of a lesson from a leadership class taught at work. According to the instructor, people are more likely to pick up litter at DisneyLand than other places. The assumption is that Disney is so committed to their guests and ensuring they have a good experience that this is carried down to the guests who in turn help look out for their fellow guests. The lesson intended to convey to leaders that our words, actions, and attitudes would filter out to our teams. We have the opposite here: how would a community referred to as a “ghetto” treat their community? It’s such poor leadership and horribly unprofessional language. Commissioner Stein must be held accountable and give a REAL apology or resign.
